Positioned on a quiet street in the heart of Islington, this one-bedroom apartment exemplifies an adaptive and experimental approach to contemporary design. The owners - a graphic designer and curator, worked alongside Dyvik Kahlen Architects to create a versatile open-plan space flooded with natural light.

The 480 sq ft interior plan is configured around an entirely modifiable living space that allows for experimental furniture arrangements. The floor-to-ceiling glazed structure built with Sky Frame panels spans the rear aspect, with views of the modernist garden planted with a mass of verdant palm trees.

The refurbishment has been carried out to an exacting standard; as part of the redesign, the apartment has been fitted with Flos lighting, an active log burner that sits centrally in the living space, and poured terrazzo concrete flooring extends throughout the apartment and into the outdoor space.

The kitchen is arranged along one wall, with integrated Miele appliances housed within white cabinetry and stainless steel worktops. The bathroom is tucked away to the rear of the plan and features green Moroccan Zellige tiles and glass fittings from Jochen Holz.

The bedroom is separated from the living space by a striking egg-yolk yellow sliding door panel. Finished with the same experimental material palette as the rest of the apartment. You’ll find floor-to-ceiling fitted wardrobes complete with handmade ceramic handles designed by Assemble Architects and wool curtains by the Bouroullec brothers for Kvadrat.

Nestled within the handsome streets of Islington, this corner of the capital is deceptively central, just a short walk from Upper Street’s trail of independent shops and restaurants and the bustle of Angel. Just across the road is the much-loved bakery and coffee shop Pophams and the family-run Italian institution Saponara. Essex Road and Angel stations are both a short walk away, and there are excellent local bus links providing quick access to central London.
